Soderstrom, Kurtz and Wynns homer as the A's beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3

(AP Photo/Sara Nevis) WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Tyler Soderstrom, Nick Kurtz and Austin Wynns each hit a two-run homer, helping the Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 on Sunday. Jeffrey Springs (8-6) pitched 6 2/3 innings of three-run ball in the win. Mason Miller handled the ninth for his 19th save. The A's won for the third time in four games. They are 41-57 at the All-Star break in their first year in Sacramento. Davis Schneider and Addison Barger homered for AL East-leading Toronto, who finished with four hits and three errors. The Blue Jays (55-41) dropped to 13-4 in their last 17 games. The A's jumped in front in the second. With Gio Urshela aboard after a leadoff single, Wynns hit a one-out drive to left off José Berríos for his sixth homer. Kurtz hit a leadoff double in the third and scored on Soderstrom's 18th homer, a 410-foot drive to center on a 1-2 sinker. Soderstrom hit a total of 12 homers in his first two years in the majors. The Blue Jays got one back when Schneider hit a solo shot in the fifth. But Kurtz went deep in the bottom half after All-Star Jacob Wilson reached on a throwing error on reliever Tommy Nance. Wilson and Kurtz are two of the leading contenders for AL Rookie of the Year at the break. Wilson is hitting .332 with nine homers and 42 RBIs, and Kurtz is batting .257 with 17 homers and 44 RBIs. Berríos (5-4) permitted four runs and five hits in three innings. He went 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA in his previous four starts. Barger chased Springs with a two-run shot in the seventh for his 13th homer. Key moment Bo Bichette hit a one-out single for Toronto in the ninth. But Vladimir Guerrero Jr. bounced into a game-ending double play. Key stat The A's are 20-31 at home this year. (AP) — Tyler Soderstrom opened Thursday night's game with a long home run and closed it with a one-out RBI single to give the Athletics a 5-4 11-inning victory over the Atlanta Braves. Soderstrom went 3 for 5 with four RBIs, his winning hit plating automatic runner Brent Rooker. Advertisement The Braves have lost 11 of 14 games and haven't won a series since they swept the New York Mets in a three-game homestand June 17-19. Atlanta has since lost five series since then and split one with the Mets. Soderstrom' 445-foot three-run homer to right field in the first inning gave the A's a 3-0 lead. JP Sears, making his 100th career appearance, retired the first 11 Braves batters he faced, five by strikeouts. Back-to-back doubles by Austin Riley and Sean Murphy put the Braves on the scoreboard with two outs in the fourth to end Sears' streak of 15 1/3 scoreless innings, which was the second-longest active one to Detroit's Tarik Skubal (18). Jurickson Profar then erased the deficit with a two-run homer to left field. Advertisement Ozzie Albies of the Braves and the A's Nick Kurtz exchanged homers to send the game into extra innings. The temperature at first pitch was 99 degrees (37 Celsius), the highest for an A's home game since that measurement was tracked daily in 1991. The highest-recorded temperature for an Athletics home game occurred July 27, 1956 when the then-Kansas City A's hosted the New York Yankees in 101-degree heat. Key moment Five A's relievers combined to allow one hit over six shutout innings. Key stat A's closer Mason Miller struck out Sean Murphy on a pitch in the ninth inning clocked at 104.1 mph. He threw five pitches that were all at least 102.4 mph. Rooker announced Thursday that he's participating in the event, which takes place Monday in Atlanta. He will become the first Athletics player in the Home Run Derby since Matt Olson in 2021. Advertisement 'Competing in the Home Run Derby has always been a dream of mine,' Rooker said in an Instagram post. 'Can't wait to make it happen next week in Atlanta! See ya there!' Rooker, 30, entered Thursday with a .270 batting average, 19 homers and 50 RBIs, putting him on pace for a third straight season of at least 30 homers. He went deep 30 times in 2023 and had 39 homers in 2024. His 58 homers since the start of the 2024 season rank him third among all American League players. The only A's to win the Derby were Mark McGwire in 1992 and Yoenis Céspedes in 2013 and 2014. Other announced participants include Atlanta's Ronald Acuña Jr., Minnesota's Byron Buxton, Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero, Pittsburgh's Oneil Cruz, Seattle's Cal Raleigh and Washington's James Wood. ___ AP MLB:
